It was a year ago that I wrote an article on “Why Sierra Leone Newspapers Should Embrace New Media Platforms.” I stressed the importance of newspapers adapting to new technologies and expanding beyond their traditional printing format.
I discussed the issue of newspapers being unable to report breaking news in real-time, particularly on weekends, due to their reliance on printing. I provided practical tips for newspapers to utilize various media platforms to ensure timely news coverage. I argued that it is crucial for the media to keep up with the changing times and find innovative ways to disseminate information to the public. Here is the piece: https://manoreporters.com/opinion/why-sierra-leone-newspapers-should-look-beyond-printing/
Citizen journalists have played a pivotal role in providing more relevant and up-to-date information during this period of unrest in Sierra Leone. News was reported in real-time by ordinary people. It was social media platforms rather than established traditional media houses that people relied on for their information in and outside the country.
There was limited media coverage from established outlets, requiring a change.
If the media fails to adapt and embrace new modes of information dissemination, they risk becoming obsolete in the eyes of the public.
